Now that it’s officially my favorite season, I’ve decided to dedicate this week’s blog post to the many things I adore about fall. If this post doesn’t make you want to throw on a sweater, grab a cup of cider, and head to the pumpkin patch, well then, I don’t know what I can do for you.
Michelle’s Top 10 Favorite Things About Fall:
10.) Back-to-school and my birthday: Okay, I know these things both already happened. And I know they happened outside of the first day of fall that’s listed on the calendar, but I still consider them to be within my own fall season. Every regular reader of The Write Timing (I love you all!) already knows my infatuation with back-to-school shopping and the excitement of the back-to-school season. And while I don’t go so far as to have a birthday countdown on Facebook like some younger sisters of mine (okay, my only sister – luvoo Manda!), I still enjoy the birthday wishes that I receive from people and the opportunity to celebrate another year of blessings in my life.
9.) Soups, chilis, and chowders: I cannot WAIT to make my first batch of taco soup for the season! There’s nothing quite like a steaming bowl of soup on a chilly evening. Many of my family’s fall traditions (and winter for that matter) include a particular recipe for soup or chili. It not only warms the body, but I truly believe that some bowls of soup have a magical property that warms the heart.
8.) Pumpkin everything: When Starbucks posts their annual pumpkin spice latte announcements, my heart skips a beat. As a matter of fact, I am drinking a pumpkin latte this very moment while I write! But I don’t discriminate. I also love pumpkin scones, pumpkin donuts, pumpkin pie, and pumpkin bars. When the end of September hits, I brush off my sweet tooth and get it ready for a season of pumpkin. (And I cannot discount apples. A caramel apple from the pumpkin patch is maybe the best treat ever.)
7.) Fall Fashion: I know my dear friend Erin will appreciate #7 (more on Erin’s new blog coming soon!). Fall means jeans, boots, scarves, and cute jackets. It means layers – more in the morning when the weather is brisk, shedding some as the days moves forward. It means darker colors for hair and nail polish. Fall fashion may cover more skin, but it can be just as gorgeous as summer fashion.
6.) Halloween: I have so much fun with Halloween, I can’t even fathom the excitement that will come once we have children to take trick-or-treating! We decorate our house and plan out our costumes. I watch as many Halloween TV specials as I can find (“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” anyone???). I buy fun treats (and some candy too) for the adorable trick-or-treaters that come to our house. And I brew up a special pot of hot apple cider to pair with Dave’s delicious chili on Halloween night.
5.) Thanksgiving: As much as I love Christmas (and trust me, I LOVE Christmas), Thanksgiving holds a special place in my heart. I think it’s the fact that the family togetherness of Thanksgiving isn’t outshone by the excitement of opening gifts. And the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is pretty incredible. Oh – and the fact that at this point in my life, I only have to bring one dish to dinner. (Ask me again about Thanksgiving once I’m in charge of the turkey.)
4.) Homecoming: This Friday, I’ll don my green, black, and silver and head to the home of the SkyHawks to celebrate homecoming. All of my high school girlfriends and their families will be there and we will cheer Skutt Catholic toward victory!
3.) Football Season: I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but I’m fairly certain that attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln had a major part to play in developing my love of football. The cheers, the tailgating, the calming of my husband when he screams at the TV (okay, I don’t love that part). Football is pure fun.
2.) Fall Colors: The reds, oranges, yellows, and golds of fall are already making their presence known. One of my favorite things about my morning commute is driving down Underwood Street in the fall. I am totally surrounded by vibrant fall colors. It’s impossible to feel anything but hope and appreciation of the beauty of nature when you’re surrounded by a tapestry of color.
1.) Fall: So much to love, so glad it’s here!
